EVE OF DESTRUCTION

"...Yeah, my blood's so mad,

          feels like coagulatin',

I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin',

I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation,

handful of Senators don't pass legislation,

and marches alone can't bring integration,

when human respect is disintegratin',

this whole crazy world is just too frustratin',

and you tell me over and over and over again

          my friend,

ah, you don't believe we're on the

         eve of destruction..."

Written by P.F. Sloan, 1965 protest song

CHRONICLE     Three teenagers find a glowing alien object one night, and somehow develop increasing powers from their contact with it. The reason this object is in the ground, why it is there, why it transfers powers to these particular teens is never explained, but it doesn’t need to be. The movie is about how these superpowers affect them. The three high school seniors are: Andrew Detmer (Dane DeHaan), his cousin Matt Garetty (Alex Russell), and Steve (Michael B. Jordan). .....more

THE MOST FABULOUS STORY EVER TOLD     It was gratifying to see a packed house at the Duke Energy Theatre last night for the second performance of The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told. The production of this irreverent, yet oddly reverent, comedy by Paul Rudnick is not for those without a hardy, off-kilter, all-out sense of humor. Comedian Mel Brooks has said, "Humor is just another defense against the universe." Mr. Rudnick closely follows that line of thinking. In fact, this is one of the funniest shows .....more

  8. Contraband    $6.5M
  9. Beauty and the Beast    $5.3M
  10. Haywire    $4M
It's a January slow down with The Grey taking the #1 slot with $20M. The other new releases, One for the Money, and Man on a Ledge are #3 and #5. January seems to be a time for the audience to re-group after the busy holiday season. Another thing to consider is that people may be staying close to home and renting movies. Nominated movies are picking up some late audience, but that's also on the slow side.
